Description
An endangered species and the rarest Goldenrod, ‘Solar Cascade’ was developed by the Cincinnati Zoo Botanical Garden Native Endangered Plant Program as part of its efforts to save the species. This goldenrod features attractive and delightful arching panicles of bright golden yellow flowers that the butterflies and hummingbirds flock to during late summer and fall. Reliable, deep green, glossy foliage remains clean throughout the growing seasons and with shorter rhizomes (spreading roots) it spreads much less aggressively than the species. Very easy to grow in zones 5 through 8 and is drought and sterile soil tolerant as well as highly disease and deer resistant remaining attractive all the way to the end of the season.Â
PLEASE NOTE: Contrary to popular belief, Goldenrod (Solidago) does not cause allergies. It’s pollen is sticky so does not blow in the wind. Bees transfer it from plant to plant. If you experience allergy symptoms during the fall it’s most likely from ragweed, which blooms at about the same time as goldenrod.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to about 3 feet tall and wide, Solar Cascade Goldenrod is truly breathtaking in groupings or mass plantings in a sunny to partially shaded landscape or woodland borders and perennial gardens. A fine addition to butterfly, beneficial pollinator, cut flower, cottage, and yellow theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 2 to 2.5 feet apart for mass plantings; 5 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Solar Cascade Goldenrod is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil in full sun or part shade. Flowering will be heavier with more sun. We suggest at least 4 hours of direct sun for best flowering.
