Description

We gardeners seeking plants for shade are always pleased to discover Toad Lilies. We’ve tried quite a few species and varieties in our gardens over the years and ‘Miyazaki’ has been one of if not the best performer over the years. The exquisite, abundant, orchid-like, purple speckled white blooms come in mid fall and continue to the first hard frost. The compact habit and graceful form of this species is beautiful as well with each arching and cascading stem having dozens of buds for a quite impressive show. Definitely a conversation piece in the garden, Toad Lilies are among the last perennials to bloom giving gardeners something fresh and exciting to end the season.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 18 to 30 inches tall and equally as wide, the Miyazaki Toad Lily is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in shady landscape and perennial borders. Also suitable for growing in pots, planters and other containers. Perfect in consistently moist soils near garden ponds or other water features. Plant near patios and other outdoor sitting areas where the flowers can be appreciated from close up. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, container gardens, cottage gardens, perennial gardens, woodland borders and around water gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 18 inches apart for groupings; 3+ feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Toad Lily is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full shade or part shade, avoiding direct afternoon sun. They prefer a consistently moist, humusy, organically rich soil. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water if you see the foliage begin to wilt. Feed in spring and again in early summer with a slow-release flower food or natural or organic plant food.
